YouTube channel hacked to cheat cryptocurrency

Many cryptocurrency-related YouTube channels were hijacked by hackers, then posted content that lured users into transferring money.

The incident took place in two days January 23-24 with a series of channels such as CoinMarketCap, Altcoin Buzz, BitBoy Crypto,Box Mining, Mayweather, The Moon… These are all major channels in the field of cryptocurrencies, attracting from a few hundred thousand to nearly 1.5 million followers.

Once controlled, these channels simultaneously posted identical videos, referring to a cryptocurrency called One World, encouraging viewers to invest in this coin by sending the cryptocurrency to a wallet address. listed in the description.

Many YouTube channels are hijacked and post scam videos.

Videos are detected and deleted by channel owners in a short time. However, according to the data recorded on the blockchain, there are at least 9 transfers to the wallet address. In half a day, this wallet owner transferred at least 2.2 BNB (Binance coin), equivalent to more than 800 USD.

The amount above is not large compared to cryptocurrency scams, but is considered a great risk for investors, especially newcomers to the market. These people often look to influential online channels like YouTube for investment advice.

In addition, the above channel owners believe that there is a vulnerability in the YouTube system itself, which causes them to take over their channel and can greatly affect the brand’s reputation. “It’s not clear what happened. We are working with YouTube to understand the issue and avoid similar violations,” said Shash Gupta, channel moderator Altcoin Buzz speak.

Michael Gu, channel owner Boxmining with nearly 270 thousand registrations, also a victim of the aforementioned mass attack. Gu said he checked and did not find viruses or vulnerabilities that could cause the channel to be hijacked. However, when checking the Brand account – a form of administrative account for large channels to separate from personal accounts, Gu noticed a strange login from the Philippines.

“Most likely the problem lies with YouTube or an employee. So the bad guy can take over the channel of many people at the same time,” Gu said, and said that YouTube will be responsible for the problem.

YouTube then contacted the channel owners to fix the problem, but did not provide any explanation.

The situation of hacking a YouTube channel to post crypto scam content has appeared before. In Vietnam in 2020, many “million sub” channels of MC Tran Thanh, singer Ho Quang Hieu were once hijacked. The attacker then conducts a livestream, luring users to deposit cryptocurrency for a reward.
