Volvo EX90, Swedish flag carrier

NEW – In charge of eventually succeeding the large XC90 SUV, this new model will be available only in an electric version.

The proportions and shapes remain the same as those of the XC90, but the more refined style and the closed grille herald a revolution. Volvo’s new large SUV doesn’t just adopt an electric drivetrain. It opens a new era for the brand of the Chinese group Geely, which has announced that it will only market electric models in 2030. The Swedish manufacturer aspires to achieve carbon neutrality in 2040.

Volvo

If the style is fairly conventional, the light signature in the shape of an elongated T and the technology based on 1.3 million pixels as well as the flush handles and the hollow sides give a welcome touch of modernity to this 5.04 m vessel. long. The EX90, this is its official designation, will be able to accommodate seven people in three rows.

For its new flagship, the engineers of the Swedish brand of a “long distance” battery. Thanks to its capacity of 111 kWh, it will allow a range of 600 km. These accumulators power two electric motors, one per axle. Two versions have been planned: 408 hp and 770 Nm of torque or 517 hp and 910 Nm for the Performance version. In line with the Swedish manufacturer’s announcements, the EX90 will see its speed limited to 180 km/h. This is better for a vehicle advertised at a weight of almost 2,800 kilos!

The end of buttons

Volvo

The interior gives pride of place to recycled and recyclable materials. In terms of ergonomics, Volvo took Tesla as a model. The dashboard is marked by the absence of all physical controls. All functions are grouped together in the huge 14.5-inch vertical touch pad located in the center of the board. The multimedia system provides access to Google applications and services.

At a time when the shortage of microchips persists and when the longevity of electronic systems is questionable, Volvo has designed its vehicle as a computer on wheels. Without laughing, in its communication, the manufacturer speaks of “a sophisticated rolling computer”. The on-board software will be able to handle the majority of essential functions: from security to infotainment to battery management. The software will be able to benefit from remote updates.

Obsessed that its vehicles will never be involved in a road accident in the near future, Volvo has equipped its EX90 with a Lidar developed by Luminar. Installed on the roof of the vehicle, just above the windshield, this device works with cameras and radars to monitor in real time and at 360 degrees what is happening around the vehicle. It is able to spot objects or people, day or night, several hundred meters away, and warn the driver to make the right decision. Inside, cameras will be able to detect driver discomfort in order to take over to bring the SUV to a safe stop and call for help. The EX90’s on-board system paves the way for fully autonomous driving when regulations permit.

Volvo

First manufactured in the United States and then also in China, the large EX90 electric leisure vehicle will be marketed from the end of 2023 at a price starting at 107,900 euros. The Performance version will require an additional 5,200 euros.

Volvo C40 Recharge, the SUV keeps a low profile

TEST – Developed on the same platform as the XC40 Recharge, the Swedish firm’s second electric SUV is paving the way for recycled and bio-based materials.

Refill. This is the common denominator that Volvo has adopted for all its rechargeable battery vehicles, whether partially or fully electrified. A confusion that should gradually fade. In 2030, the Swedish manufacturer, which has belonged to the Chinese group Geely since 2010, will only produce 100% electric models. An intermediate step is planned for the middle of the current decade with 50% of its production in zero emissions. The C40 Recharge, its second electric vehicle, will have to contribute to this.

Volvo

From the XC40 Recharge, from which it inherits the platform and technologies, it is distinguished by a more sloping windscreen as well as a sloping and lowered roof of 60 mm. This style, which we may find a little clumsy, especially at the stern, and which reduces rearward visibility, serves an aerodynamic Cx of 0.32. Every point counts for efficiency. With its useful 75 kWh battery, this SUV has a range of 441 km, which amounts to a consumption of 20.8 kWh. A value that is difficult to reproduce, even on an essentially urban and peri-urban route. To this must be added an on-board system which does not accept more than 150 kW of charge and which requires a shutdown of at least 40 minutes to restore 80% of the battery.

No animal leather

Volvo

Still, the performances are worthy of a sports car (0 to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds) and the pleasure is there, especially with the highest regeneration which dispenses with using the brake pedal. The cabin is modeled on that of the XC40, except for the standard panoramic glass roof and the upholstery, the first to dispense with animal leather. It is based on 80% recycled materials, in particular plastic bottles. Even with the 4% discount applied to take advantage of the €2,000 bonus, the bill remains high. A more accessible 231 hp front-wheel drive version is planned for 2022.

Luxury car models to be offered to the Vietnamese market in 2022

The new Mercedes S-class, Audi e-tron, Range Rover or Lexus LX 600 are the names that will appear in 2022.

After a quiet 2021, car manufacturers in Vietnam are expecting that the market will be brighter and more vibrant in 2022. Realizing that wish is the plan to bring new car models home, including luxury cars.

Mercedes

The German automaker plans to add a car of the new version in Vietnam in the new product category after the E-class and S-class, the C-class, and a high-end version of the GLS, the GLS Maybach.

GLS Maybach may return to Vietnam, in the first or second quarter of this year, for the C-class it may be later.

The new design of Mercedes is still unisex suitable for both men and women. Currently, in Vietnam, Mercedes is providing 3 products with new designs: E-class, GLE, GLS. In addition, in 2022, the company may introduce more EQS electric car model.

BMW

Similar to the country’s automaker, BMW will also bring back two new products to Vietnam, the 4 Grand Coupe series and the 8 Grand Coupe series. While series 4 has a convertible version in Vietnam for more than 3 billion VND, series 8 is the first time coming to Vietnam.

In even-numbered sports versions such as 2, 4, 6, 8, BMW will offer three options Grand Coupe, Coupe and Convertible. Meanwhile, the original versions like 3, 5, 7 will only have sedan or wagon. In Vietnam, there are only popular versions of each line such as odd-shaped sedans, even-numbered convertibles.

The price of this model is expected to be about VND 7-8 billion, higher than the price of the X7 in Vietnam. Series 8 is also BMW’s leading high-performance sedan to replace series 6. According to the dealer, in addition to bringing in a few new models, it is likely that BMW Vietnam will switch from importing to assembling a number of models such as: series 3, series 5 or X3.

Lexus

Launching a new version on the world market in October 2021, Lexus officially received orders in December 2021. The delivery time is expected in 2022, so the LX 600 may be launched this year in the Vietnamese market.

LX 600 has no specific information about equipment, but there will be 3 options instead of one as before, which is a 7-seat version, 7-seat Super Sport and a 4-seat version with prices ranging from 7.9 to 8.9 billion VND.

The most notable feature of the new Lexus 600 compared to its predecessor, in addition to the new design, the car also uses a new engine and chassis, like the changes on the new generation Land Cruiser.

If about all 3 versions, genuine Lexus is determined to beat private salons in selling Lexus. Currently, private salons are still importing non-genuine Lexus from the Middle East and the US with a price difference of nearly 1 billion, but mainly the Middle East Super Sport and 4-seat MBS imported from the US.

In addition, in 2022, Lexus Vietnam can bring back the LC 500 model for about 8 billion VND. The Lexus sports coupe model was imported by private showrooms for about 10 billion VND in 2018.

Before the LC 500, Lexus Vietnam also sold another sports coupe model, the RC 300, for about 3.3 billion VND.

Land Rover

Similar to Lexus, Land Rover also launched a new generation full-size SUV, Range Rover. The car has a simplified design in many details from the interior to the exterior, with a new engine and chassis to optimize performance.

Like Lexus, Land Rover faces stiff competition from imported salons. The advantage of genuine cars is that there are more versions, easier to order equipment, but genuine Land Rover has a much higher selling price than private imported cars.

For example, a Range Rover SV Autobiography version has a genuine price of about 17-19 billion VND, while an outside salon sells about 12-13 billion VND with equivalent equipment. The current new Range Rover model has a genuine booking price for the Autobiography version of about 14-17 billion VND and the SV Autobiography version can cost up to 25 billion VND. The car is expected to return to Vietnam in the second quarter.

In addition to Land Rover, the Jaguar brand belonging to the group of the group may also launch its first electric car model in Vietnam, the I pace. This model has been rolled on the streets of Hanoi, used by the British embassy office.

Audi Vietnam will also launch a pure electric model e-tron next month. However, this is just the introduction of this model to customers, the plan, the price of the company does not have a specific schedule this year.

Volvo This year, it is not expected to launch more new cars, but will add hybrid versions of existing models, similar to the XC60 or XC90 in November 2021.

Porsche Vietnam has no plans to launch new cars in 2022, but the company supports ordering with models that have been launched in the world, although the waiting time is quite long, usually 6-9 months or more than a year depending on the model. on equipment and vehicle model selected by the customer.

Volvo Concept Recharge, a style manifesto

NEW – Thought and designed around electric propulsion, the next generation of vehicles from the Swedish manufacturer optimizes the interior architecture.

With the announced conversion to all-electric, the next cars will evolve considerably. Rest assured, these vehicles will still have a steering wheel and a pedals to accelerate and brake, but the interior architecture will be disrupted. Like the entire automotive industry, Volvo is preparing for this breakthrough. In 2030, the Swedish manufacturer planned that its catalog will only offer 100% electric vehicles. The switch to electric propulsion makes it possible to completely rethink the architecture and completely free itself from the constraints inherent in a thermal model. The switch to electric is a boon for designers who will be able to draw silhouettes devoid of overhangs and equipped with wheels at all four corners, a guarantee of balanced lines. This is reflected in the VolvoRecharge concept which inaugurates a new formal language and announces the next generation of the XC90.

Volvo

This large SUV, whose volumes could have inspired a future Renault Espace, has worked on its aerodynamics, which is essential for autonomy. This concept adopts a closed grille and very fluid lines marked by a fleeting roof line like that of a coupe and a vertical drop. The next generation of Volvo will draw heavily on this slender concept.

Volvo

The treatment of the interior has been completely redesigned and takes advantage of the electric propulsion to eliminate the transmission tunnel and have an entirely flat floor, for the benefit of roominess and passenger comfort. The new architecture also offers more freedom in terms of arrangement of storage spaces. Finally, the dashboard is largely inspired by Tesla with the removal of all buttons and a man / machine interface based on a large 15-inch vertical touch screen. Already designed for autonomous driving, this concept incorporates a Lidar sensor on the roof. It can thus easily collect data on the environment of the car.

Along with the emergence of a new stylistic language, Volvo is continuing to develop electrical technologies. This is how the Swedish manufacturer is working in two directions: increasing the electric range and shortening the recharging times of the battery. Volvo is working with battery manufacturer Northvolt on a new generation of batteries based on NMC chemistry (nickel, manganese, cobalt) with a higher energy density of up to 700 WH. It should be available from the end of 2025. By 2030, Volvo hopes to be able to market electric vehicles with a range of 1,000 km.

Volvo C40 Recharge, a coupe but electric SUV

NEW – Variation of the XC40 Recharge, the second 100% electric model from the Swedish manufacturer is distinguished by a leaky roof.

At Volvo, even when you remove the X in front of the number, you should expect to see an SUV pop up. It will certainly be a 100% electric model since the Swedish manufacturer belonging to the Chinese Geely has planned to sell 50% of its production in electric. The other half will be provided by hybrid vehicles. By 2030, all models sold are expected to be fully electric. Already including the XC40 Recharge, the range will quickly grow. From the end of 2021, a second model will be marketed. This is the C40 Recharge, a “coupé” version of the XC40 P8 Recharge SUV. On the design side, nothing really original, this C40 differs from its brother by a receding flag and a very inclined rear window. The front is still characterized by a closed grille body color while the optics are based on pixel technology.

Volvo

The interior presentation is similar to the two models. Ditto for the electric traction chain which carries two electric machines, one per axle. They will be powered by a 78 kWh battery (75 kWh useful). The manufacturer announces a range of at least 420 km but it should improve over time thanks to updates made remotely.

The Volvo C40 Recharge can be ordered online. The Swedish manufacturer has indeed announced that it wants to “radically simplify the process of acquiring a 100% electric model by reducing the number of stages.” It already plans to sell 50% of its electric models online in four years. While ensuring that the dealers retain their place in the system, since in particular delivery and maintenance will remain assured by it, Volvo is moving towards the dehumanization of its relationship with customers.

When Volvo throws cars 30 meters high

NEWS – Sings of safety, the Swedish manufacturer has released from the top of a crane a dozen new vehicles to simulate the damage and improve passenger rescue scenarios.

Sometimes life hangs by a thread! The Swedish manufacturer Volvo, which has set itself the ambition of not lamenting any more deaths on board its models within a few years, threw ten new cars into the void, suspended from a crane 30 meters high. These more violent shocks than in a conventional crash test simulate a collision involving a single car at very high speed, a high speed collision between a car and a truck or a severe side impact inflicted on a private car. . Volvo accident research teams have been served. The objective of simulating the damage to the vehicles and the emergency scenarios to be implemented to extract the passengers as quickly as possible has been fulfilled.

Volvo

These drills are of great importance to Volvo because not only do these crashes usually take place in the laboratory and rescuers usually train with scrapped and often over twenty years old vehicles but never with new ones. For the first time, Volvo carried out these crashes with models designed with high-strength steels and equipped with the latest passive safety technologies.

Volvo

Designed as a real training session, these tests made it possible to validate the best extrication strategies using hydraulic devices known in the jargon “jaws of survival”. In total, Volvo threw ten vehicles off the crane several times. Prior to that, Volvo engineers accurately calculated the pressure and force each car had to be subjected to to achieve the desired level of damage.

Note that this is not the first time that a manufacturer has released a vehicle from a crane. Porsche had lent itself to the exercise in the early 1960s with a 904 GTS.

Volvo XC40 P8 Charging, first contact

At the rate of one new model per year, Volvo will have five electric vehicles in 2025. With this zero-emission range, the Swedish manufacturer aims by then to achieve 50% of its volumes and reduce the carbon footprint of the vehicle by 40%. life cycle of its cars. Developed from the XC40 SUV voted Car of the Year in 2018, the first model of this new family arrives at the end of the year on our roads. The closed grille painted in the color of the bodywork and discreet badges are the only elements that distinguish the Recharge P8 AWD version from models with a combustion engine.

ACE Team

Inside, the differences are just as minimal and only visible when the system is powered on. The new interface was developed with Google. Its operating system running on Android makes it possible to take advantage of Google Assistant voice control, Google Maps and remote updates. Next year, new features will ensure the unlocking and starting of the vehicle via the smartphone, but also the transfer of the digital key to a third party, your spouse or your children.

ACE Team

At the cost of a few adaptations of the battery placed under the floor, the engineers managed to preserve the livability of the XC40. The loss of 47 liters of trunk capacity (413 liters) is largely offset by the provision of 31 liters of space under the front hood. The latter easily accommodates the two charging cables provided, one of 10 A to connect to a domestic socket and the other for wallbox, unfortunately limited to 16 A (3.7 kW) and requiring nearly 20 hours of charging. To divide this time by three, it will cost 355 euros to access the optional cable to use the maximum power of the onboard charger of 11 kW. Provided a quick charge is found, the Volvo battery accepts a charging power of 150 kW so as to recover up to 80% of its energy in 40 minutes. To encourage the switch to electric, the Swedish manufacturer offers any buyer of an XC40 T8 before December 31, 2020, the charging station, up to a limit of € 1,149 for a single house or € 599 for a joint ownership.

ACE Team

It is characteristic of an electric vehicle: the XC40 T8 comes to life without a sound. No more vibrations from a diesel and the soundtrack that attacks the eardrums. The best is yet to come. This SUV leaves its location with disconcerting vigor, similar to that of a GT. The acceleration puts you in the seat. 100 km / h is reached in 4.9 seconds; 130 km / h barely three seconds later. On the Mortefontaine circuit, the scene of our test, a small straight line is enough to block the counter at 180 km / h, the top speed of this SUV. A performance for this SUV still weighing nearly 2.2 tons including 500 kg attributable to batteries with a capacity of 78 kWh (75 kWh useful). It must be said that the XC40 T8 claims a power of 408 hp thanks to its two permanent magnet synchronous electric machines of 204 hp (150 kW), one per axle.

ACE Team

The traction managed by the all-wheel drive is never faulted thanks to a fine distribution of the torque (660 Nm). The lower center of gravity and the firmer sports chassis of the R-Design finish also contribute to the balance of handling. Given the inertia of the whole, we are not sorry to have a very powerful regenerative braking and three positions. The highest allows a rather pleasant driving called “a pedal”. Perfectly completed and free of jerk, this system eliminates the need to apply the brake pedal in many situations, especially in town. It contributes to the safety that Volvo has set to an even higher level than usual.

ACE Team

The manufacturer, which no longer wants any death or serious injury in its cars, has equipped the XC40 T8 with the ADAS device coupled with a multitude of cameras, radars and sensors and allowing in particular the automatic avoidance of pedestrians or cyclists, in addition to braking emergency. There remains the other thorny subject of the electric vehicle: autonomy. Our brief contact did not allow us to verify it but Volvo announces 418 km in the combined cycle and up to 538 km in the city, according to the WLTP standard. Available as an option (+ € 660), the heat pump helps increase autonomy. Finally, the XC40 T8 Recharge is expensive for its quality services. If it is eligible for the ecological bonus of 3,000 euros, at 59,940 €, it remains by far the most expensive model in this range of SUVs.
