The first memory of my school is the hours under the flickering kerosene lamps, in the sketchy shack set up in the middle of the forest for city children to evacuate to the countryside to avoid bombs.

I started elementary years in the North when the war against America was fierce. Our children at that time had no idea of ​​a stable learning environment.

I study everywhere I can, from my home, in an evacuation place, to the woods. I learn from anyone willing to teach, from my mother, my neighbor’s aunt, or my elder brother or sister in the village. It was not until 1972 that I knew what a real school was when I returned to Hanoi after the bombings stopped.

For our generation, war and its consequences have created a world of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity – today called the world. VUCA.

However, those challenges could not bury our thirst for learning and passion for knowledge. I read and memorized every book I could get my hands on, be it history, literature, or biology. In a way, that was the “liberal education” that I created for myself.

However, my VUCA world at that time was small and closed. Everyone has the same starting line, and faces the same challenges. But for today’s young people, the world VUCA is facing is completely different.

It is a place where changes take place day by day, hour by hour and are unpredictable due to the rapid development of science and technology. Automation and artificial intelligence, while bringing great value to society, also lead to unprecedented economic turmoil as many industries – from assembly-line work to retail and law – in danger of disappearing quickly. It is a world where, as scientists predict, about 80% of the jobs in 2030, less than 10 years from now, have not yet appeared.

During the past years, and now, when the Covid-19 pandemic is upsetting the old normal order of life, we educators often ponder the question: Education, especially education What can university do to prepare today’s young generation so that they can firmly cope with the uncertain future out there? Will traditional university models designed to train only a narrow major still be suitable for unimaginable changes?

There has been too much debate about higher education reform, about the higher education philosophy that Vietnam should pursue. But I think, in the end, we need to return to the true mission of higher education, which is “helping learners adapt and manage the changes taking place in society”. I believe that the university of the 21st century must teach students how to “learn how to learn”, so that they know how to forget the knowledge that is no longer relevant, learn and continuously recreate knowledge and skills. new capabilities as the Covid-19 crisis itself is teaching us.

That is also the reason why from day one, we founders of Fulbright University Vietnam decided to pursue a liberal arts education model – a proven model of equipping learners with ability to adapt to change in work and social environments through a broad knowledge base and vital skills such as critical thinking, problem solving and creativity.

But the journey to convince society of new educational options and experiences has not been smooth. I still vividly remember the first days five years ago, when we invited some parents and education experts to talk about liberal arts education. There are many questions and doubts about the practicality of this approach. Given that most Vietnamese believe that going to university to get a career, many cannot understand why students have to spend at least the first year at Fulbright to learn about many areas of fundamental knowledge, from science to science. from the natural sciences, to the social sciences, to the humanities and the arts, before deciding on a particular major.

But just two years after Fulbright took on the first batch of students, the answer became increasingly clear. Recently, I received a sharing from a human resources director of a large Vietnamese technology company, she said that their CEO highly appreciates Fulbright students who are intern here because of their presentation skills, advice and ideas. Critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork are much better than expected. Some students have received official job offers from the company even though they have only completed their sophomore year of university and even though they have not yet chosen a major. For us educators, it is a meaningful encouragement.

In the famous “human capital” theory, Nobel Prize-winning economist Gary Becker once pointed out that human capital usually accounts for 70% – 75% of a country’s potential for prosperity. Asian countries, from South Korea to Japan, are cited as examples of economies that have used education to drive growth. Although they have very few natural resources, they have invested heavily in the education system, especially higher education in order to develop human resources and reap the rewards.

Vietnam is no exception if they want to follow their successful path. In order to achieve better socio-economic achievements, Vietnam must successfully transition to knowledge-intensive and high-value-added economic activities. But whether we like it or not, we still have to admit to each other the fact that there is a big gap between the urgent need for high-quality human resources and the state of Vietnam’s higher education, which is clearly reflected. The unemployment rate is increasing day by day.

What can we learn from the current Covid crisis? That is, perhaps: delaying action in preparing for change comes at a heavy cost.

Change is no longer in the future tense. It is happening right now, here, and requires each of us to rethink how the VUCA world will shape the lives of each individual, each community, and the country to which we belong.

That journey, more than ever, must begin with education.

Accordingly, a country is defined not only by hard borders but also as a “soft” community artificially built over time by people who consider themselves to be in that group. The nation is also an “imaginary community” because most of the people in that community do not meet each other, but are only connected through common habits, ideals or interests.

Of the nearly 100 million Vietnamese people around the world, few have met more than 10,000 people in real life, but they are upset every time they hear the news that China is operating in the South China Sea, when their homeland encounters natural disasters, or their compatriots go through many hardships. lost in the last pandemic. The imaginary community could be thousands of people marching everywhere against China, remittances sent home or it could be very small features like the question “have you eaten?”.

There are things that are so essential but so familiar that we forget their existence until they are gone. Culture and ethnicity are the same.

We all have friends who are studying or working abroad. Having a “green card” is already difficult, the journey to truly integrate into a new nation is even more difficult. Many of them are caught in the middle of two worlds: they feel lost in their new country while their home country greets them with an unfamiliar name – overseas Vietnamese. How will their patriotism be shared, when “patriotism” has always been an exclusive feeling – only for one and only one source.

Vietnamese people today continue their journey towards the world, going all the way to study, make a living or seek their life-changing dream. Vietnam is always in the group with the most students in the US, Australia or the UK. Questions of ethnicity, patriotism, and ancestry probably continue to plague many people. Which side will the new generation of Vietnamese lean towards, the homeland where they were born or the new homeland?

The stronghold of “ethnicity” and “national culture” has never been shaken as violently as it is now. But perhaps in that danger of survival, we will have the opportunity to re-evaluate our nationality and reflect on the fate of other cultures.

What makes millions of Vietnamese across five continents call each other compatriots? There are things that are not necessarily named, defined, or detailed in resolutions and documents. So are cultural and ethnic identities. Millions of people with millions of different ways of feeling and vibrating about “Vietnameseness”, that will be the strongest protective net for Vietnamese culture.

A culture can only last if it values ​​the openness and freedom to feel of each individual. Cultural policy, therefore, needs to ensure freedom of thought, promote culture and real creativity, so that a new culture has the collective strength to last. That is, the role of cultural policy makers is to open up rather than reframe values, to define what is national, what is cultural, and what is not.

In order for Vietnamese culture to develop in a pluralistic and clashing world, the mindset of untying, minimizing restricted areas, and creating conditions for culture to develop more naturally must be encouraged. In fact, in the age of globalization, no one “forbids” anything. It’s not hard to find a banned movie online. Most recently, the success of the “Korean wave” did not come from prohibition but from the encouragement of the development and investment of cultural products by the majority of the private sector. No one criticized the Oscar-winning “Parasite” or “The Squid Game” watched by hundreds of millions of people as non-Korean, although the story in the film criticized the dark corners of society very heavily.

If everyone has the right to have “Vietnamese” according to their feelings, Vietnamese culture will have millions of protective nets. Globalization has brought civilizations into collision and we are faced with a choice: open and adapt or resist in a cultural jihad like Don Kihote fights windmills.

If we still struggle to fix values ​​that always change over time, we will still be stuck in our own imaginary cage.

At school or at home?

The first online parent meeting of the school year turned into a debate: whether to send your children to school or continue learning online at home.

At the beginning of the meeting, the teacher said “welcome”, our parents looked at each other through the camera. Slow-exploding landmines

My staff and I both understand, doing “three on the spot” is like walking on a road full of slow-explosive landmines.

I received a letter asking the business to stop doing “three on the spot” after 15 days. Vaccines just gave me chills, but the dispatch gave me a fever. After requiring businesses to apply “three in place”, the local regulator issued a written request for us to stop.

On August 1, the Provincial People’s Committee and the Management Board of Tra Vinh Economic Zone asked businesses in the area to “actively and flexibly apply the three-in-place option to maintain production”.

As a high-tech company in the province, our products are exported to 63 countries through signed long-term contracts. Doing business with foreign customers is very principled, if the delivery is late or not of the right quality, you may have the contract canceled and have to compensate for all related costs of their company.

After two weeks of planning, according to regulations, we have to send an official letter to the Management Board of the Provincial Economic Zone requesting the implementation of “three on the spot”. After receiving the approval letter from the Board, we selected 387 employees to join the company to implement the model. My company has nearly 800 employees, a quarter work from home, more than a quarter have to temporarily stop work and receive benefits equal to the regional minimum.

In the early morning of July 28, 2021, employees packed towels into the factory. Before that, we contracted with the provincial hospital to go to the company to conduct a PCR test for Covid-19 and everyone got negative results.

The model is applied in a factory on 20 hectares in Long Duc Industrial Park. We have two large cafeterias that serve three meals to our employees. The private farming area of ​​nearly 10 hectares in Long Tri island provides clean and fresh food for the canteen.

Employees are divided into small groups, staying in separate buildings according to each production department. Meeting rooms and offices are converted into residences. The company’s regulations are very strict, employees are not allowed to go near the fence and not be in contact with outsiders.

The company’s security team is responsible for the outer ring, taking on additional tasks of receiving goods and food. They must not come into contact with the delivery person and the company’s employees. The delivery person arrives, leaving the goods in the specified place outside the fence. An hour later, security guards dressed in protective gear came to disinfect, lined up on trucks that were always parked outside the fence with UVC lights for sterilization. More than thirty minutes later, the driver got out of the fence, drove inside the company and delivered to the department. The team of drivers, even though they have been vaccinated with two vaccines, are not allowed to come into contact with the security team. All signed documents are done through the mobile application.

Inside the company, we strictly implement 5K from the beginning of the translation. During working hours, employees exercise on site at 10 am and 15 pm to avoid office sickness. After work, they are encouraged to jog, exercise, yoga or play badminton, tennis, volleyball and football. Staff clothes, after bathing, are served to be washed and dried and delivered the next day.

After more than two weeks, nearly 400 employees have gradually gotten used to living and working on-site, feeling safer. On the morning of August 15, 369 people were rapidly tested and vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine. But around four o’clock in the afternoon, I received a dispatch requesting the enterprise to let employees rest for 14 days at home after the injection, and at the same time stop “three on the spot”.

“You guys are getting ready to go home,” I went to the engineers’ break room and said. Everyone exclaimed: “Wow, what’s wrong, uncle?”. A grandchild said, now that we return to the inn, we will starve to death. Before, we come down here to work, eat three times a day in the company, go back to the motel room to sleep overnight. Currently social distancing, there is no voucher at the hostel to go to the market, but if you can buy food, you can’t cook with pots and pans, even if you want to go home, you can’t. Another child asked: “Why am I doing so well that I have to stop?”. I said, “Children who want to stay at the company should write to the board of directors asking to stay with a good reason. We will try our best to fight. I’m also worried if we let them go.” .

I try to find an answer to the reason why businesses are forced to stop “three on the spot”. On July 30, a company in the same industrial park discovered a case of F0, the company was blocked, all employees were not allowed to leave the factory. With each passing day, the plant becomes a “virus incubator”, F1 becomes F0 and F2 becomes F1. Ten days later, there were nearly 200 cases of F0 here. Even the seven key militiamen on duty became F0 and a source of infection in the community. That business has not yet done “three on the spot” has become the outbreak. A garment company about 25 kilometers away from us with nearly tens of thousands of employees also discovered many F0 cases due to infection from family members returning home from epidemic areas.

Enterprises with F0 have become a concern of local leaders. Since some companies have F0 in the province, all other businesses that receive orders have to shut down when we don’t have any F0 shifts.

I again wrote an official letter to the Provincial Committee with letters from employees to “beg” for the company to continue operating. Two days later, the Chairman and Vice President of the province held a meeting at the office of the committee to hear me express my wish to continue implementing the “three on the spot”.

“Do you dare to commit to taking all responsibility before the law if the disease spreads?”, the provincial president asked. Without hesitation, I replied, “A thousand percent sure, I promise.” The leaders promised to review and reply soon.

At six o’clock on August 19, I received a letter from the Provincial Committee allowing the model to continue. Like a vaccine, it helps the company fight the “bankruptcy virus” that according to the General Statistics Office has “killed” more than 80,000 businesses in the first eight months of this year.

I know, business doing “three in place” is like walking on a road full of “slow-exploding F0 mines” if you don’t step carefully and skillfully. Enterprises successfully implementing this model must have enough facilities along with the mind and responsibility of leaders not only inside but also outside the company’s fence.

The whole country is not alone my company is doing “three on the spot”, although we are still trying to find a more optimal model. Our factory was not closed at the last minute, but thinking about thousands of other companies, I see that, once a business is doing well “three places” that must be anxious, running everywhere to get a job. continue to operate, something is wrong in the government’s perception and business management system. We entrepreneurs expect this approach to be considered for adjustment.

Covid-19 has changed every aspect of our lives, but we have to accept to find the way. The head of the Government yesterday issued a new message in the national anti-epidemic view: “This war is still long, we have to live with the epidemic… adapt and do it right.”

“Accommodating” also means that we do and correct at the same time. Confusion is not scary if corrected in time. The scariest thing is that each person is not determined to overcome the fear of responsibility, causing himself and the people around him to fall in this great battle.

Fake news, as we know, has been rampant with the pandemic since the beginning of 2020. Fake news confuses people, causing unnecessary panic. From “last-minute news” such as the army will use helicopters to disinfect the whole city to the number of people who died from Covid 19 and were abandoned by hospitals. The management agency has sanctioned countless cases, but fake clips and announcements still crept everywhere, in closed groups, whispering to each other. Fake news wreaks havoc on the Internet community’s immune system.

But there is still a news that is considered “drinking bait” for netizens still exists. It’s a delta variant of fake news, which is “half-baked-half-truth” news.
