Return to 90 km/h: beware of unjustified PV

495862916/Paweł Michałowski – stock.adobe.com

RIGHT OF THE USER – On the roads where the limitation is back to 90 km/h, all the radars have not yet been recalibrated. How to dispute an unjustified PV?

Since the mobility orientation law (LOM) offers the departments the possibility of returning to the speed limit, 45 departments have since decided to return to 90 km / h on their roads. But it may be that all radars are not yet recalibrated.

If you receive a report taking an account for a speed of 80 km/h while the section of the place of the verbalization has moved back to 90 km/h, it is in your interest to contest the report by requesting the application of the new standard.

Either the offense is no longer characterised, and the report will be dismissed, or the class of the offense changes and the penalties will be less severe.

What about PV in progress and not yet paid?

All ongoing procedures for reports drawn up on roads at 80 km/h must be the subject of a request to take into account the new regulations at 90 km/h.

According to the principle of retroactivity of the softer law, in this case of a more advantageous regulation for the motorist by the return of a speed to 90 km/h, the offender must request either the cancellation of the fine if his offense is then no longer constituted, or the downgrading of his offense for the same causes.

The courts will obviously have to rule on this point of law.

Mini Cooper SE Convertible, cradled by the wind

NEW – Unique model, this vehicle announces the marketing of a convertible with electric motor on the next generation of Mini.

The electric-powered convertible? Here is a genre that manufacturers have not yet dared to offer in their catalogs. This formula should however become a reality very soon. Mini has already announced that the next generation of the 3-door “sedan” launched in the course of 2023 will be available in a convertible version. If we exclude the Tesla Roadster and the Citroën E-Méhari produced a few years ago with very few copies, this will be the first time that a manufacturer has mass-marketed a vehicle of this type. Eventually, other brands also plan to integrate this type of model into their ranges. It must be said that several elements militate in favor of this combination.

Bernhard Filser

The electric cabriolet is the insurance to travel hair in the wind in complete silence, just lulled by the wind. And to reject no polluting emissions.

Unique copy designed from a Mini Cooper S convertible, the Mini Cooper SE Convertible therefore announces the arrival of an electric convertible on the next generation of the Mini scheduled for the course of the year 2023. This new model, we knows it, will inaugurate the new stylistic language deflowered by the Aceman concept.

Bernhard Filser

As for electric technology, it is still a bit early to know its definitive characteristics. As for the prototype designed on the current model, it borrows its technical solutions from the current Mini Electric. The T-shaped battery takes up the entire cabin floor. With a capacity of 32.6 kWh (28.9 useful kWh), it powers an electric motor with a power of 184 horsepower. The manufacturer announces a range of 230 km for this convertible capable of reaching 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds. As for the soft top, it retracts automatically in 18 seconds, even when driving up to 30 km/h.

Jaguar E-Type Lightweight, one of thirteen for sale

AUCTIONS – Rare event: on the sidelines of the Pebble Beach competition, Bonhams sells one of the three “Lightweight” of the Cunningham team entered at Le Mans in 1963.

This is the second time in five years that Bonhams has offered at auction, as part of its Quail Lodge California sale, the Jaguar E-Type Lightweight chassis number S850664. In 2017, this vehicle was sold for 8 million dollars, or nearly 6.8 million euros. An auction that this competition vehicle could repeat. Several elements militate in favor of this price level. The Lightweight was developed to race in events renowned for embodying the golden age of endurance and rivaling the GTs of the early sixties that are the dream of collectors around the world. Admittedly, the English has neither the aura nor the track record of the Ferrari 250 GTO that it found on its way, but it is rarer than the Italian berlinetta. The E-Type Lightweight is a centerpiece of Jaguar racing history and is eligible for the biggest sporting events on the calendar reserved for vintage cars, including Le Mans Classic.

The lightweight Type E that Bonhams will auction on August 19 is the seventh in a series of only thirteen vehicles, if we include the coupé made for French collector Pierre Bardinon.

Bonhams

Listed under the registration “5114 WK”, the famous Lightweight is the second of three cars that American Briggs Cunningham ordered from Jaguar in 1963. Like the other two, the E-Type in the sale raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1963 in the colors of the American team, recognizable by the white bodywork embellished with two central navy blue stripes. Bearing the race number 14, chassis “S850664” was entrusted to the Walt Hangsen-Angie Pabst pair, while Briggs Cunningham and Bob Grossman shared number 15 and Roy Salvadori and Paul Richards number 16. Of the three cars, only the n°15 will finish the Le Mans event, in 9th place, behind six Ferraris, an AC Cobra and the eight-cylinder Porsche 718 /RS spyder.

Pawel Litwinsky

After the Le Mans event, the 4-speed gearbox which had caused the retirement of the E n°14 was replaced by a 5-speed ZF transmission. In this configuration, the E took the direction of the United States. It allowed Hangsen and Richards to finish 11th in the Road America 500 race in September 1963 and then Richards to finish 4th in a race at Bridgehampton the following weekend. After a short-lived sporting career, the E was stored in the Cunningham Museum in Costa Mesa, California.

Honda Civic Type R, for rolling mechanics

NEW – The year of its twenty-fifth anniversary, the Civic Type R returns in an even sharper version, designed from the eleventh generation.

While most generalist manufacturers have given up on the vitaminized versions of their sedans to reduce their carbon footprint, Honda will continue to offer a Civic Type R in its catalog. The latest, launched in early 2023, was developed from the eleventh generation of its mid-range sedan that the Japanese manufacturer has just marketed. Starting from a vehicle that has become more stylish than the previous model, while lowering and widening, the new Type R is equipped with a particularly neat aerodynamic package.

UCHI

The concern for performance and cooling of the main elements is reflected in the presence of air intakes in the front bumper, an air intake on the bonnet, extractors behind the front wheels and at the ends of the rear bumper as well as a rear diffuser. In addition to rocker panels on the sides, the new Civic Type R sees its rear window surmounted by a spoiler. Honda has definitely done nothing by halves for this Civic which has already broken the Suzuka track record in its class. It is camped on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires which dress 19-inch light alloy rims. As for braking, it is always signed Brembo.

Honda

The interior of the latest Civic offers a sportier ambience based on enveloping bucket seats in red suede, instrumentation and specific display modes and enhanced functionalities including telemetry for circuit trips. To the Comfort, Sport and +R modes, the engineers have added an “Individual” mode to customize its settings.

Under the front hood still breathes the 4-cylinder 2-litre VTEC in a revisited version. The older generation delivered the power of 320 horsepower. Without specifying the technical characteristics, the Japanese manufacturer assured that the new version would be more powerful. These performances are based on the adoption of a new turbo but also on a new exhaust system. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Scheduled for early 2023, the Civic Type R will certainly be the last thermal engine Honda launched in Europe.

AUCTIONS – On the sidelines of the Californian Concours d’Elegance in August, auction houses are stocking up on exceptional machines.

It had to happen one day. More and more large collections, often built up during the Glorious Thirties and therefore enjoying an irrefutable pedigree, are found on the market. Proof that their owners are only the temporary custodians of their exceptional machines. In the United States, the estates of eminent collections are generally settled at Pebble Beach, as part of the annual Concours d’Elegance which brings together the greatest collectors on the planet. The 2022 edition (from August 18 to 21) is no exception to the rule.

On the shores of the Pacific, between the golf course of Pebble Beach and the picturesque village of Carmel, the largest Anglo-Saxon auction houses (Bonhams, Gooding & Company and RM Sotheby’s) will parade more than 300 cars. This year, more than any other, we had never seen so many dispersed collections. This will be an almost unique opportunity to acquire automobile “Mona Lisa”, whether by their rarity, their…

Gordon Murray T.33, a limited edition of 100 units

NEW – Following on from the T.50 supercar, the second model from the South African engineer is a 2-seater berlinetta dedicated to driving pleasure.

No need to rush. The second model developed by Gordon Murray Automotive, the new company of the South African engineer, is already sold out. In fact, the hundred copies quickly found takers despite a price of 1.37 million pounds sterling excluding taxes (1.67 million euros). It must be said that for a weight similar to the Alpine A110, the man of the successes of Brabham and McLaren in F1 has designed a berlinetta which displays much more impressive characteristics and performance. Around a carbon and aluminum monocoque structure, the T.33 accommodates nothing less than the latest atmospheric V12 that Cosworth has concocted for it.

With a displacement of 4 liters, this aluminum block installed in the rear central position has been deflated compared to the version driving the T.50. It delivers 600 horsepower at an incredible, hold on, 10,500 rpm. A rotation speed reserved for racing cars and motorcycles. This V12 with four valves per cylinder is even capable of running at 11,000 rpm while the torque is established at 451 Nm at 9,000 rpm. The 1.8 kg/hp weight/power ratio has no equivalent in current production.

Gordon Murray

The V12 is mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Here again, Murray favored sensations over efficiency since a dual-clutch transmission would have favored performance. Moreover, the manufacturer continues to be as silent on the accelerations of its latest supercar.

CMG

Around a length of 4.39 m, a width of 1.85 m and a height of 1.13 m, the silhouette of the T.33 is largely inspired by the GTs of the 1960s which fascinated Gordon Murray. Round and pure, the line of the T.33 dispenses with unsightly aerodynamic appendages. Nor did Murray keep the huge turbine-shaped air extractor that personifies the T.50. As for the rear, it evokes the famous Porsche 904 GTS with its two round lights at each end of the stern.

CMG

This will not surprise anyone: to display a weight of 1,090 kilos, the cabin dispenses with everything superfluous. Unlike the T.50, which is distinguished by its three front seats and central driving, the T.33 berlinetta is a strict two-seater. The instrumentation is reduced to its simplest expression around the steering wheel. This did not prevent Murray from using quality materials and taking care of the finish.

The first copies of the T.33 will be delivered from the year 2024. By then, the first T.50 should already be in circulation.

Double-sided radar: two flashes are better than one!

/morane – stock.adobe.com

RIGHTS OF THE USER – As part of the modernization of the fleet of speed cameras, the radar called “double-sided radar” will be generalized on our roads after an obviously conclusive phase of experimentation of several months.

This new radar should not be confused with the “two-way” radar which flashes offending vehicles coming from both directions of traffic.

This “two-way” radar emits two separate photographs (the first from the front and the second from the rear of the offending vehicle) to, we are told, help identify the driver and also allow users to be flashed two motorized wheels whose plate is at the back.

In the absence of an arrest, it is therefore the holder of the gray card who receives the notice of violation.

By denying being the driver of the vehicle and therefore denying being the perpetrator of the offence, the holder of the registration certificate only incurs a financial penalty. To carry out this procedure, he will have to dispute being the driver, then record the amount of the fine beforehand to dispute the infringement.

As soon as he contests the offense in this way and cannot be mistaken as the perpetrator of the offence, he cannot be criminally sentenced (no suspension, no loss of points) and will only be liable of the fine.

Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera RS, 50 years already!

NEWS – Mother of the line of current GT3s, the first Carrera “RennSport” from 1972 remains one of the most adored 911s.

Its duck tail overhanging the bonnet… A characteristic that sets it apart from other 911s. It is not there to attract attention, although that is the case, but to reduce rear lift by more than 70%, and improve air circulation in the engine compartment. The 911 2.7 Carrera RS is not a model like the others. It was developed to meet the requirements for competition homologation.

Porsche

At the start of the 1972 season, the new sports regulations, limiting the engine capacity of prototypes to 3 litres, marked the death warrant for the 917 – victorious two years in a row at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1970 and 1971). As a replacement, Porsche wanted to invest the new championship reserved for grand touring cars with a 911. Produced in at least 500 copies, the minimum required for its homologation, the first 911 Carrera in history was presented as a muscular version of the 911 2.4S.

Porsche

With a displacement increased to 2,687 cm3 by increasing the bore to 90 mm and cylinders coated with Nikasil, the flat-six with mechanical injection gained 20 hp to display 210 hp at 6,300 rpm. As for the torque, it went from 215 to 255 Nm. At the same time, the rear fenders were widened to accommodate 7-inch rims. Its weight was reduced to 960 kg in its sport version thanks to its two-seater livery with plastic-shell bucket seats and polyester bumpers.

The race in sight

Porsche

Foreseeing, Porsche declined a touring version as well equipped as the 2.4 S. Presented as a racing car perfectly usable on a daily basis, the 2.7 Carrera RS was such a commercial success that 1,541 units were produced. This 911 was the basis of a line of racing cars covered with laurels, from Le Mans to African lands, passing through the snows of Monte-Carlo.

Car rental dispute

269246509/methaphum – stock.adobe.com

RIGHT OF THE USER – In France and abroad, a few setbacks can tarnish the end of the holiday when returning your rental vehicle. Know that the law protects the consumer.

1. The rented car model is no longer available

Since the contract is law between the parties, the rental company must offer you another equivalent model, or even a higher category without a price increase. If you accept a downgraded model, the lessor must refund the amount paid. In any case, you would be entitled to cancel your rental free of charge.

2. The vehicle breaks down

The lessor must provide you with a vehicle in working order. In the event of a breakdown, he must propose its replacement and, if necessary, reimburse you for the costs incurred. Please note that the renter remains responsible for the routine maintenance of the vehicle (tire pressure, level of liquids, etc.).

3. I flashed myself with the rental vehicle

The lessor who receives the report will nominate you to the authorities.

It may contractually provide for management fees. He can in no case pay the PV with your bank details. Once the PV in hand, you can naturally dispute it even if you remain pecuniary indebted for the fine.

4. I am subsequently billed for a repair on the vehicle

You must imperatively make an inventory at the pick-up and return of the vehicle. Otherwise it will be considered to be in good condition at the time of rental.

In the best case, it is necessary to report any problem to the reception of the vehicle and to photograph or better film it before/after the rental. The rental agency can only charge for repairs if it demonstrates that these damages were caused during the rental.

Alpine A110 E-ternity, the electric berlinetta

NEW – On the occasion of the F1 Grand Prix of France, the French manufacturer presented a new concept of berlinetta with electric motor.

Crime of lèse-majesté or unbridled opportunism? Call it what you want, but Alpine has found a way to attract the spotlight with a berlinetta that has swapped its 1.8-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder for an electric powertrain. The vehicle is not intended to be mass-produced but proves to be a way of showing that the thing is not as incongruous as it may seem. This demonstrator is also a means of preparing minds for the Dieppe brand’s transition to all-electric from 2025.

Alpine

Replacing the heat engine with electric technology was a challenge for the small French berlinetta, whether in terms of size, weight and center of gravity. The engineers took up the challenge brilliantly by slightly modifying the structure to house the batteries with a capacity of 60 kWh. Their installation in the floor not being possible, the twelve battery modules, identical to those of the Mégane E-Tech Electric, are distributed between the front (four) and the rear (eight) where they are installed almost the vertical. If the engineers managed to preserve the distribution of the masses (42/58), the center of gravity, the main asset of the berlinetta A110, loses its superb. At the weigh-in, the conversion to electric is paid for by an overweight of 258 kilos. The weight thus goes from 1,120 kilos to 1,378 kilos. It’s not nothing but it remains lower than many current sports. The use of composite materials made from recycled linen to make the bonnet, the roof, the seat shells and the rear apron, helped to contain the weight.

Alpine

A power of 242 hp

For its part, the electric motor borrowed from the electric Mégane has a power of 178 kW (242 hp), slightly lower than the basic version of the A110 sedan and a torque of 300 Nm. less favourable, performance is down. 100 km/h is reached in 4.5 seconds, instead of 4.4 seconds for the 292 horsepower version. For the 1,000m standing start, she passed the milestone in 23.7 seconds, or 1 second more. The engine is mated to a DCT dual-clutch gearbox that has been extensively modified to only have two gears. As for autonomy, the nerve of the war for electric vehicles, Alpine announces 420 km according to the WLTP cycle.

Alpine

The latest innovation from this mobile laboratory is the integration of a sunroof made up of two manually operated recycled carbon shells. Equipment that could perhaps see the light of day as an option on the thermal engine versions.
