RIGHT OF THE USER – According to the law, the confiscation of a vehicle does not necessarily suppose that the author of the facts is the owner of the vehicle.
The Highway Code provides for the judicial confiscation of the vehicle belonging to a road user when he is the perpetrator of an offense (alcohol, use of narcotics or speeding). But the law also allows in certain cases the confiscation of the vehicle, object of the offence, even if the author of the facts is not the owner.
The judges thus authorized the confiscation of the vehicle used to commit the offense when it was the property of a company whose manager was none other than the convicted person. It was admitted in this case that this company was not a bona fide owner since the manager was in fact the only user of the vehicle.
Until recently, the confiscation of the vehicle could also be ordered against an owner who knew of his friend’s dangerous behavior on the road.
His bad faith, like his lies to the investigators to protect his friend, will have cost him his vehicle.
TEST – The CO2 emissions of a city car, the comfort of a saloon and the performance of a supercar: electrified, the latest English berlinetta delivers an immense repertoire.
Everything is new. Introducing plug-in hybrid technology, McLaren’s latest creation is unprecedented. It’s not obvious. The fault with a silhouette which seems a decal of the other models and which could give the impression that the English manufacturer, which has just celebrated its 10 years, is treading water. Close examination of the lines gives another reading. Around the doors in the elytron, the Artura is distinguished by a significant aerodynamic work which leads to sides dug in the continuity of large air intakes, vertical openings around the projectors, exhausts which blow in height and which dispense with the use to unsightly aerodynamic appendages. Compared to a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, the shapes will appear less exuberant but the result is a model of elegance.
Knowing that a plug-in hybrid drivetrain is not the most suitable for a rear-engined super sports car in terms of weight and size…
NEW – Inspired by the Prophecy concept, the Korean firm’s electric cruiser will make an impression with its very aerodynamic silhouette.
The main Achilles heel of the electric car is its range, especially on the highway. Past 110 km / h, due to air resistance, consumption soars. The best way to delay stopping at the charging station is to take care of efficiency by relying on the most aerodynamic bodywork possible. These considerations guided the development of Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 electric sedan. To save energy and ensure satisfactory autonomy, the designers endeavored to outline lines that reduce aerodynamic drag. Hyundai has come as close as possible to the ideal so-called ovoid shape for the Ioniq 6 sedan, the second model in its new family of electric cars.
Close to the Prophecy concept, this vehicle will be talked about with its smooth silhouette like a pebble and whose arc-shaped roof seems drawn in one line. The Korean manufacturer is for the time being careful not to announce the technical data and in particular the radius of action, but everything has been thought out to achieve a category record. Thanks to clean lines, a streamlined underbody, reduced wheel arches, the use of active air flaps and digital exterior mirrors (optional), Ioniq 6 achieves the feat of lowering the Cx aerodynamics at 0.21. The treatment of the rear part with the double fin represents the other originality of the design.
Although very different from the Ioniq 5 crossover launched last year, Ioniq 6 shares the same E-GMP platform and the same dashboard. The length of 4.85 m including 2.95 m for the wheelbase will benefit the rear habitability.
The Ioniq 6 sedan will go on sale at the end of 2022. Next year, the Korean brand will introduce the Ioniq 7, the third element of its electric offensive, to the market. This family vehicle will take the form of an SUV. Like Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, Ioniq 7 will have its own character. His style will not be governed by a logic of scale.
TEST – Entirely renewed, the latest MP3 is close to an automobile in terms of its technological content.
After having revolutionized individual mobility with its MP3 tricycle and converted, in the space of sixteen years, nearly 230,000 people, more than half of them in France, mainly from the car industry, Piaggio has decided to open a new chapter with a completely renewed model. This is apparent at first glance with a more expressive style marked by the installation of LED lights and indicators in the fairing. Among the original features of this design, the number plate integrated into the rear mud flap is exposed to damage by being placed so low. Still open to B license holders (provided they follow a 7-hour training course for new entrants), the new MP3 is available in two versions: 400 and 530 cm3, but it is with the most efficient that you access the best of technology.
Hands-free key in the pocket, the single-cylinder 530 cm3 snorts after turning on the ignition via the rotary button and pressing the starter button. The on-board computer indicates a range of 260 km. At idle speed, the MP3 is not free from vibrations. Everything is in order from the first meters. Compared to the 500 cc it replaces, the 530 hpe has benefited from significant modifications in order to meet the Euro 5 standard. If the power does not change much, the torque increases to reach 50 Nm at a lower speed. There are no small savings: the suspension is lightened by 1.1 kilos and the scooter loses 7 kilos to display 280 kilos. It’s still a lot, especially in town where its maneuverability does not equal that of a two-wheeler. But, the Italian tricycle is aimed primarily at “commuters”, those who easily travel 50 km per day and essentially make peri-urban journeys.
Vigorous accelerations, covering the first 60 meters takes 0.4 seconds less than before, making it easier to enter fast lanes. The 110 km / h are reached quickly and by turning the throttle fully, it will be possible to flirt with 145 km / h. Three modes are available to the driver. In Sport, throttle response is quicker. When in Eco mode, it restricts the power by 20%. At high speed, we feel movements in the front axle but without the heading holding being altered. The general approval progresses notably thanks to a lowered sound level, a more considerate suspension, a tinted and more voluminous windshield protecting perfectly from the wind and an improved comfort of seat. The handlebars have been moved back and raised by 10mm, the wider floor has been lowered by 20mm and the saddle has been redesigned. Another plus: the apron incorporates knee protectors.
To these developments, Piaggio has added certain refinements that propel the MP3 into a new dimension. The instrumentation is based on a 7-inch TFT color screen, the largest on the market. It offers perfect readability and an easy-to-use joystick, on the left side of the handlebar, ensures navigation in the various menus. With the manufacturer’s application, by connecting your smartphone via Bluetooth, you can have your music library, manage your phone calls and also display navigation instructions for a planned route on the dashboard.
Developed from the Sport finish of the 400, the 530 cc innovates, adding driving aids hitherto unknown on this type of machine. The MP3 warns, by a visual alert on the screen, of the presence of vehicles in blind spots (up to 30 m). This safety system is coupled with the lane change assistant to further reduce the risk of collision with a rapidly approaching vehicle. Finally, the Italian trike adds cruise control and a reverse camera. Requiring pressing the start button, the operation is not free of jerks. To acquire this new MP3 530, you will have to pay 12,999 euros, or 2,000 euros more than the 400 Sport and the old 500.
NEW – This study foreshadows the first electric sedan that the German manufacturer will launch on the market at the end of 2023.
Volkswagen didn’t brag about it. On tiptoe, the Passat sedan disappeared from the catalog. She will not be replaced. Instead, the Wolfsburg manufacturer will offer a 100% electric sedan that will be very close to the ID concept. Aero. The sixth element of the ID electric range, this vehicle, which will take the trade name ID.7, will be the German brand’s first zero-emission sedan. It will also be developed on the manufacturer’s MEB electric platform. A model with a global vocation, the ID.7 marketed in Europe will be produced in the German plant in Emden from the end of 2023.
With a length of nearly 5 meters, it will aim to compete with the Kia EV6 but also all the high-end sedans from general manufacturers. The simple and refined shapes of the hatchback silhouette and the absence of door handles, replaced by tactile surfaces, betray the search for maximum efficiency, a guarantee of great autonomy. The greater freedom offered by the electrical architecture and the use of the MEB platform have made it possible to outline a balanced and dynamic silhouette with wheels positioned at the four corners. The work of the designers is rewarded with a Cx 0.23 aerodynamics. With the 77 kWh battery borrowed in particular from the ID.4 and other models of the group, the Aero concept boasts a range of 620 km. This represents a clear improvement compared to the German SUV, which has an approved range of 100 km less.
TEST – Two special editions of the current Z900RS celebrate the mythical Z1 launched fifty years ago, under the name of Kawa 900.
At Kawasaki, RS stands for Retro Sport. A trend launched in the early 1990s with the Zephyr. A “naked bike”, or naked motorcycle, which contrasted with the streamlined models in vogue at the time. Today, it is the Z900 RS which illustrates the trend by marrying the look of a seventies machine with the most advanced technology of the moment. For an additional €600, the “50th Anniversary” version pushes the mimicry to the point of taking up the Fireball brown and dark orange color of the original “four legs”, embellished, as at the time, with a bar of chrome support for the passenger and some specific acronyms.
Only the four pots are missing. The SE (Special Edition) is more important, since in addition to its Yellowball yellow color, also original, it is distinguished by its Brembo braking, its Öhlins shock absorber adjustable while driving and its golden fork. It is displayed 1,800 € more expensive than the standard version which, at 12,649 € remains a better price-performance ratio.
Retro but not too much
If the saddle a little high can be a problem for small jigs, it provides in return a straight position of the most comfortable. With considerate suspensions, perfectly smooth controls and a very smooth engine at low revs, this makes changes in town or at the pace of the ride particularly pleasant. But, RS is a bit like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. As soon as you turn the handle, it transforms into an impressive sensation factory. Its 4-cylinder, now water-cooled, may be slightly deflated compared to the nasty Z900 (125 hp), in the absence of a windscreen, with its 111 hp of fire, it quickly turns your head . Worthy of a real sports car, the very sharp cycle part keeps pace and therefore fully justifies the name of the model.
NEW – Close to its mass production, the supercar from the firm with the star gives a fairly precise idea of the sensations experienced by Lewis Hamilton at the wheel of his single-seater.
Installing a Formula 1 engine in a road car: this is not the first time that a manufacturer has tried the experiment. But never has the level of sophistication been so high as with the Mercedes AMG-One. The result of close collaboration between the engineers of the F1 department of the English factory in Brixworth, the AMG technicians in Afalterbach and the Mercedes design offices in Stuttgart, the Project One supercar is close to production. A vehicle made its first public outing last weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The first copies are now almost ready to be delivered to their owners. It’s almost a miracle as the development of this extraordinary vehicle has been a journey strewn with pitfalls. Adapting the operation of an F1 engine to road use, or even city use, required special development.
According to the specifications, the AMG-One had to be able to start without requiring the intervention of an army of engineers and be used on a daily basis without fear of breaking down. It’s that the Project One is powered by the Formula 1 engine of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Hybrid technology combines F1’s 1.6-litre V6 with four electric motors. The first is directly integrated into the turbocharger, the second is installed directly on the V6 and the last two are on the front axle. Depending on the modes, the Mercedes supercar can be rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or traction (electric mode).
A cumulative power of 1,063 hp
Featuring air-spring distribution and revs of up to 11,000 rpm, the V6 delivers 574 horsepower. With the contribution of the electric motor of 90 kW (122 hp) connected to the turbocharger and that of 120 kW (163 hp) connected to the crankshaft of the V6, the cumulative power comes to 680 hp. By combining the two electric motors located on the front axle and each delivering 163 hp, Mercedes announces a total power of 1,063 horsepower. The combustion engine is associated with a seven-speed manual gearbox developed especially for the One.
The lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 8.4 kWh provides an electric range of nearly 18 km.
In the end, the Mercedes supercar does not exceed 1,695 kilos on the scale thanks to a monocoque cell and a carbon body but also to five-arm axles made of aluminum. The latter incorporate adaptive suspensions. As for the style of the car, it is dictated by the laws of aerodynamics and the significant cooling needs.
Finally, the search for the best possible driving comfort dictated the ergonomics and the interior atmosphere. The F1 type steering wheel covered with buttons will require, like all the elements of the car, some explanations before hitting the road. Six driving programs are offered: electric, standard hybrid favoring electric mode, Race with the V6 which recharges the battery, Race Plus to be reserved on the circuit. In the latter case, the aerodynamics adapt to intensive use, the chassis is lowered by 37 mm at the front and 30 mm at the rear. From the Race Plus mode, it is possible to activate the Strat 2 mode allowing full power to be available, as for a qualifying lap. This is how 100 km/h is reached in 2.9 seconds; 200 km/h in 7 seconds. Note that when cold, the internal combustion engine never starts before the catalysts have reached their operating temperature.
RIGHTS OF THE USER – Each summer, because of the high temperatures, dramas occur targeting children or animals left in full sun exposure in a vehicle.
If all the preliminary precautionary steps (search for the owner, call for the police or emergency services) do not make it possible to urgently resolve the situation which you are witnessing, the law allows you to intervene without risk of criminal prosecution and thus legally breaking the window of the passenger compartment.
Indeed, although the owner of the vehicle whose window has been broken, could file a complaint for damage to his vehicle, article L.122-7 of the Penal Code protects you.
The law provides that a person is not criminally liable who, faced with a present or imminent danger which threatens himself, others or property, performs an act necessary to safeguard the person or property, unless he there is a disproportion between the means employed and the seriousness of the threat.
It is then recommended to intervene in the presence of witnesses and for example after having taken photos demonstrating the situation with which you are confronted.
NEWS – The false denunciation of a fictitious perpetrator of an offense is severely punished. The criminal risk is indeed higher than the consequences of the offense initially noted.
It may be tempting to designate a parent, relative or even a third person whose driving license circulates on social networks as the author of a report. In the event of a deliberately false designation, the informer is liable to the penalties of a repressed slanderous denunciation of 5 years’ imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros, but also to penalties repressing forgery and the use of forgery, i.e. 3 years’ imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros.
In addition, the fact of giving inaccurate or erroneous information for the author of a request for exemption or a complaint is punished by a fine of up to 1,500 euros.
Of course, this speed camera fraud does not stop there, since the author of the false denunciation will also have to answer before the judge for the traffic offenses he has committed.
NEWS – Bonhams will sell on September 30 in Newport, United States, a 507 roadster parked for 43 years in a box in Philadelphia.
It still seems incredible today. Not all garages have revealed their secrets yet. Almost everywhere in the world, certain cars have been sleeping, sometimes for several decades, away from prying eyes. They have been forgotten or concealed. They reflect a family history.
This is how the Anglo-Saxon house Bonhams got their hands on one of the 252 copies of the 507 roadster that BMW marketed in the mid-1950s. In its own juice and relatively well preserved, this vehicle was parked in a box adjoining a pavilion in a modest neighborhood of Philadelphia. This is a 1957 Series II roadster with rare options: Rudge wheels and a hardtop.
The 507 will be one of the attractions of the Bonhams auction which will take place within the framework of the Audrain competition in Newport on September 30th. In anticipation of the sale, Bonhams pieced together the history of the 507. The roadster was sold new in Caracas, Venezuela. In 1979, he moved to Montreal, Canada, to the seller’s father. The famous BMW was then driven to a garage in Philadelphia, which it never left for 43 years. Occasionally the V8 was started.
The 507 will be sold without a reserve price. It is estimated at 1.8 and 2.2 million dollars.
