Electric cars: a very largely subsidized ecological transition

Public support measures remain insufficient to reduce the carbon footprint. François BOUCHON/Le Figaro

FOCUS- France Strategy questions the fact that registrations of electric vehicles did not exceed 10% of the mix last year. This, despite significant public support measures.

This is Carlos Tavares’ hobbyhorse: the ecological transition risks excluding a large part of the population from mobility due to the much higher price of electric vehicles compared to their thermal equivalents. To provide grist for the mill of the general manager of the Stellantis group, France Strategy wonders, in its note of November, on the fact that the registrations of electric vehicles did not exceed 10% of the mix last year. despite significant public support measures.

Over the first eight months of 2022, they have increased to represent nearly 13% of the market share, but this remains insufficient to reduce the carbon footprint and hope to have a sufficiently large second-hand fleet in a few years. in order to achieve even greater gains. And the recent announcement by the Head of State of the increase from €6,000 to €7,000 in the ecological bonus for the purchase of this type of model will not change the situation.

Our list of the best electric cars under 40,000 euros

EXCLUSIVE – We have ranked the 34 most affordable 100% electric models available on the French market, according to their performance.

Driven by the ecological transition, 100% electric vehicles are sweeping the French market. Difficult to navigate in the kilowatt-hour jungle. However, fans of the thermal car will have to take an interest in it sooner or later. The sale of diesel, gasoline and hybrid cars is scheduled for 2035, but some large cities want to take the plunge long before.

SUVs, family cars, city cars or road cars … Manufacturers are offering models at increasingly lower prices. They also promise wonders when it comes to their engines: more range, charging speed, more performance and energy savings. To find out who are the good (and bad) students of this new generation of vehicles, Le Figaro decided to compare

100,000 charging points: an objective already out of reach?

INVESTIGATION – Brought forward one year by the government to support the acceleration of the ecological transition, this program to install a public charging network is slowing down. Decryption.

“As of May 1, 2021, France had 33,363 points open to the public, an increase of 7% since the start of the year”, declared Cécile Goubet, the general delegate of Avere-France (the national association for the development of electric mobility), in the latest national barometer of charging infrastructure. About 67,000 are missing in France to reach the target of 100,000 load points at the end of 2021 set by Jean-Baptiste Djebarri, the Minister for Transport, in October 2020.

Slow deployment

So there are now a little less than eight months and we are still far from the mark. If, between 2015 and 2019, the installation of terminals was fairly sustained with an increase fluctuating between + 13% (2018) and + 31% (2016), in 2020 it was only + 4%. This slowdown, which looks like a pause, does not fail to challenge as a large number of local authorities and departmental energy unions have, at the same time, continued the installations

Electric cars: Mercedes and Toyota premieres

Each in their own register, these two manufacturers swell the ranks of the electric.

At first we thought it was a joke. With most of the world living under the pandemic regime, an auto show opened to the public yesterday in Shanghai. It gives pride of place to zero emission models. Toyota is unveiling the bZ4X concept there, which prefigures its first 100% electric vehicle scheduled for the end of 2022. As much as its surname is tortured (bZ: Beyond Zero), the balanced and dynamic lines are as realistic.

The first of the seven models in the bZ family, this SUV inaugurates the e-TNGA modular electric platform developed in cooperation with Subaru. Toyota maintains the suspense on the borrowed technologies, but we already know that the steering is by-wire and that solar charging will be available. The shape of the steering wheel is more like science fiction than an automobile. The production vehicle from the bZ4X is part of a vast program to reduce the carbon footprint that will result in the launch of 70 electrified models by 2025.
