Apple’s design failures

Apple has had many designs that were considered unsuccessful, such as the Macintosh TV or the famous iPhone 4 antenna problem.

Many Apple products have been praised for their highly aesthetic, bold, and market-leading designs. However, not all of its designs were successful.

Macintosh TVs

In 1993, before the Apple TV, Apple created a Macintosh with the function of watching television. The product is essentially a combination of part Mac and part TV. With a bulky design and a price of $ 2,099, the device was not interested by users and sales were so poor that Apple “killed” it after only three months of release.

Apple Newton

Apple's design failures - 1

Newton is a personal digital assistant PDA that is considered to be ahead of Apple’s time. The company started developing the platform in 1987 and shipped its first devices in 1993. Newton’s emphasis was on handwriting recognition. However, through many versions, this feature is still rated as very bad. According to some insider sources, Steve Jobs seems to hate Newton very much. He immediately discontinued this PDA when he returned to Apple in 1997.

Original iMac Mouse

Apple's design failures - 2

The first-generation iMac was a symbol of the computer’s future development, but the mouse that came with it was criticized as “very terrible”. The product has a circular design, which is difficult to use because navigation is difficult, forcing users to look at the mouse every time they control it.

iPod Shuffle Gen 3 without joystick

Apple's design failures - 3

The third generation Shuffle is a compact, screenless device that allows listening to music without distraction. However, Apple also cut down on most of the control keys on the device, forcing users to operate through wired headphones. The new design is inconvenient and has been reacted by users. Apple later realized the mistake and brought the joystick system back on the iPod Shuffle Gen 4.

iPhone 4 Antennagate Problem

The iPhone 4 is arguably one of the most iconic and beautiful devices Apple has ever made. However, improperly holding this smartphone may prevent it from receiving a network signal.

Apple's design failures - 4

On the iPhone 4, Apple designed a metal frame that acts as an antenna for the device. However, when touching the bottom left edge of the phone, the network signal is significantly reduced. When users complained, the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that they “handled the product in the wrong way”. However, Apple eventually had to admit the problem and “fire” by releasing a new case to minimize the problem and fix it on the iPhone 4s model.

Location of charging port of Magic Mouse 2

Magic Mouse 2 is appreciated for its design as well as its ability to manipulate, except for the charging port located on the bottom of the device. Many people reflect that they cannot use the mouse while charging, as well as charging is inconvenient.

Mac Pro ‘Trash’

Apple's design failures - 6

The 2013 Mac Pro computer is considered a breakthrough design of Apple. However, the product was likened to the trash right after its launch. In fact, the lack of upgradeability and the difficulty of repair made the product unpopular. In 2019, Apple returned to the tower design for the Mac Pro.

iPhone 6 is prone to bending

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were the first iPhone models to feature Apple’s curved edge design. These are also two of the company’s best-selling models. However, the disadvantage of this smartphone is that it is easily bent.

Apple's design failures - 7

Apple has stated that “only a small number” of users are affected. However, Apple’s internal tests, later revealed in court documents, showed that the iPhone 6 Plus was 7.2 times more likely to bend than the iPhone 5s. The American company then fixed the problem by using stronger aluminum for the iPhone 6s.

Charge the first Apple Pencil

Photo: Thomasfuchs/Twitter

Photo: Thomasfuchs/Twitter

Apple’s original Pencil model was designed to charge by plugging directly into the iPad’s Lightning port. However, this method makes the device cumbersome and easy to break the charging port if careless. Apple corrects the mistake by switching to wireless charging for the Pencil 2.

Butterfly key

General scissor key (left) and butterfly key (right).

Apple scissor key (left) and butterfly key (right).

Apple’s ultra-thin “butterfly” keyboard was first introduced in 2015 on the 12-inch MacBook and later on the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro series. However, this design makes the keyboard easy to damage if accidentally trapped dust or debris under the key. Apple has realized the mistake and recently returned to the scissor key design.

‘Rabbit ears’ on MacBook

Follow The Next Web, the “notch” on the iPhone X does not make this list because it helps integrate Face ID and increase the display area. But with the MacBook, this approach is considered confusing and odd.

Apple's design failures - 10

In fact, the “rabbit ears” on the MacBook Pro do not contain Face ID, only the camera, microphone and notification LED. Creating a large defect on the screen is considered unnecessary and less useful because laptops have a larger display space than smartphones.

Some argue that Apple intentionally did this just to increase brand recognition for the MacBook Pro. Many predict the new design will “die prematurely” in the near future.

iPhone 14 Pro uses Samsung’s ‘punched’ screen

The two high-end versions of the iPhone 14 series will use an OLED screen that leaves an area for the camera and the front FaceID system.

Image of iPhone 14 design according to rumors. Photo: Phonearena

Follow Phonearena, iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will use Samsung’s HIAA (Hole in Active Area) display manufacturing method. In which, the manufacturer will use laser drilling technology between the OLED deposition steps and TFE thin film fabrication. This process requires high precision as the hole must be sealed against oxygen and moisture to prevent deterioration of the LED.

Samsung’s factory will use Philoptics laser cutting system and Wonik IPS vacuum chambers. The source said that Philoptics will supply equipment worth about 27 million USD to Samsung Display factory in Vietnam next year or during the time it is necessary to accelerate the production of iPhone 14 Pro.

Screen processing and manufacturing for the iPhone 14 is more risky because it uses a flexible OLED screen with many plastic components instead of the usual glass base. Due to Apple’s high demand, some recent rumors claim that Samsung’s assembly line in Vietnam will increase the capacity of flexible OLED screens by 50% in 2021.

In addition to Samsung, LG still has the opportunity to provide LTPO screens that support high refresh rates for iPhone 14 series. However, this sale will depend heavily on tests to see if it can achieve the required quality and cost at a level Apple can accept.

At the end of September, analyst Ming-chi Kuo, who made many accurate predictions about Apple’s unreleased device, said that the iPhone 14 will have an in-display fingerprint sensor, a “punched” design and a cluster. The rear camera is flattened. The new design makes the overall smartphone more beautiful, but could be thicker.

Meanwhile, the account@PandaIsBald. Continue to use Face ID but not equip Touch ID under the screen for iPhone 14.
