Quang Ngai proposed to build an airport with a runway length of 2,400 m, serving 3-3.5 million passengers per year to develop Ly Son Island.
Proposing the Prime Minister on May 7, Quang Ngai said that the province should have solutions to attract strategic investors to develop a prime location with potential tourism such as Ly Son island district. However, the biggest obstacle of the province is transport infrastructure. Currently to reach the island can only be reached by sea, so “inconvenient for tourists”.
Therefore, Quang Ngai proposes to build a 4C international airport in An Hai commune, under a BOT scheme. The airport accommodates A320, 321 and equivalent aircraft.
At the same time, this province proposes to the head of the Government to consider and direct the Ministry of Transport to update Ly Son International Airport in the national aviation and airport development master plan for the period of 2021-2030. .
“The construction of the airport has an important meaning to help Ly Son island develop socio-economic, ensure national defense and security”, the leader of Quang Ngai province acknowledged.
However, in the evaluation report on airport planning submitted to the Ministry of Transport in early May, the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam proposed to keep the number of 28 airports nationwide until 2030; by 2050 adding Cao Bang airport. A series of proposals to build airports in the provinces of Ha Giang, Bac Giang, Ninh Binh, Binh Phuoc, Ha Tinh … have not been approved.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Dung, Deputy Director of Planning and Investment (Ministry of Transport), said that the current Vietnamese airports with less than 2 million passengers per year are having to cover losses. Therefore, if the access distance to the neighboring airports is less than 100 km, if the access distance to the neighboring airports is less than 100 km, according to international experience, the efficiency is not high. This means that building airports too close to each other (between the two provinces) will not be effective.
Ly Son Island, an area of about 10 km2, is the front-end island district of Quang Ngai, 15 nautical miles from the mainland; with a million-year volcanic geological heritage and many landscapes and historical relics such as Thoi Loi mountain, To Vo gate, Chua Duc, Hang Cau …
The island is associated with the history of the army of Hoang Sa, where his father under the order of the king to hold the sovereignty of the sea and islands has become a famous tourist destination in recent years with 200,000 visitors per year. Near the island, there are Chu Lai and Quang Nam airports (about 45 km away) and Phu Cat airport, Binh Dinh, 160 km from Ly Son.
In March, Quang Ngai agreed with the Ministry of Transport to open the high-speed train line Da Nang – Ly Son. But this sea route is still in the plan.
During the war, the Army of the Republic of Vietnam built a military base on Ly Son Island with a runway near Thoi Loi mountain for small jets.
