The German manufacturer has been developing cars over the years to take part in the East African Safari, later renamed Safari Rally. Under the impetus of Belgian driver Jacky Ickx, Porsche then took up the Paris-Dakar challenge with 911 Carreras modified from 1984 and then with 959s. Porsche’s participation in the premier rally-raid event resulted in two victories, in 1984 and 1986.

Today, there is no question of returning to rally-raid but simply of maintaining the fascination exerted by the 911 with a raised version that revives the memory of this exceptional period that those under forty did not have. could know. Emotion sequence: the new Porsche 911 Dakar will be able to receive an optional decoration evoking the car that René Metge drove to victory in 1984 on Lac Rose.

Unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show, the 911 Dakar is distinguished at first glance by its ground clearance raised by 50 mm compared to a 911 Carrera with sports chassis. The specific standard lifting system also makes it possible to raise the front and the rear of the car by an additional 30 mm, which makes it possible to benefit from ground clearance and a ventral angle equivalent to those of a Classic SUV. This is how this model can overcome obstacles at low speed but also at higher speeds. The “high” level is available up to a speed of 170 km/h. Passed this course, the ground clearance lowers to resume its normal configuration. Experts from the Weissach technical center admit that the 911 Dakar, thanks in particular to a contained mass, displays better crossing capabilities in sand in particular. These performances would not have been possible without tires adapted and specially developed by Pirelli. If P Zero double carcass are offered as an option, as standard, the 911 Dakar is fitted with Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires with a deep tread (9 mm) and reinforced sidewalls. These casings have been developed to be equally at home on asphalt. Nevertheless, this equipment imposes to limit the top speed to 240 km/h. Another specificity of this special model developed by the Exclusiv Manufaktur department: the rear spoiler made of plastic reinforced with carbon fibers is fixed.

Off-road modes

Under the rear bonnet, the 911 Dakar hosts a new evolution of the biturbo 3-litre six-cylinder boxer delivering 480 horsepower and 570 Nm of torque. This mechanism is associated with an 8-speed PDK gearbox and Porsche all-wheel drive. Standard equipment also includes rear-wheel steering and the PDCC active roll stabilization system. All this equipment allows the 911 Dakar to offer the same driving dynamics on sand or gravel as on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring.

Compared to a standard 911, the Dakar version is enriched with two new driving modes: the Rally mode, ideal for loose and uneven ground, and the Offroad mode, which increases the ground clearance by 80 mm and is reserved for heavy and sandy terrain. .

Porsche has obviously planned everything and even that the future privileged 2,500 who will acquire this limited edition can venture off-road and afford, why not, a night under the stars. The red aluminum towing rings at the front and rear are part of the standard equipment, as well as the underbody and side sills protected by special steel elements and the black fender flares. On the roof, the Porsche 911 Dakar has clearly visible standard electrical pre-equipment to which additional LED headlights integrated into a specific roof rack can be connected. Offering a load capacity of 42 kg, the roof rack makes it easy to carry essential rally equipment: water or petrol jerry cans, folding shovel or even sand plates. A roof tent is also available as an option for the 911 Dakar.


The interior also benefits from a particular treatment. In addition to the absence of seats in the back, we note the presence of integral bucket seats, lightened glass glazing and an ultralight battery. This is how the 911 Dakar weighs barely 10 kilos more (1,605 kilos) than the 911 Carrera 4 GTS with PDK gearbox.

Less discreet, the Dakar decoration inspired by the colors of the tobacco company which sponsored the commitment to Paris-Dakar in the mid-1980s is invoiced at 26,280 euros. A “Martini” decoration evoking the cars entered in the Safari Rally should also be offered. As for the 911 Dakar, it is already in the catalog at a price of 226,689 euros.
