The Russian Investigative Committee on July 20 released a video of Colonel Alexei Safonov’s luxury villa in the Stavropol region, southern Russia after his arrest.
They said in a statement that Safonov and six subordinates were arrested for allegedly accepting bribes of 19 million rubles ($255,000) “over several years” to issue permits to illegally transport grain. Safonov faces 8-15 years in prison if convicted.
Lawmaker Alexander Khinshtein of the United Russia party said more than 35 people from the Stavropol traffic police department were arrested in a large-scale operation.
“A real mafia group is active in the area,” Khinshtein wrote while sharing photos of the lavish interior of Safonov’s mansion. A detail that many netizens noticed is the gold-plated toilet.
