They said in a statement that Safonov and six subordinates were arrested for allegedly accepting bribes of 19 million rubles ($255,000) “over several years” to issue permits to illegally transport grain. Safonov faces 8-15 years in prison if convicted.

Lawmaker Alexander Khinshtein of the United Russia party said more than 35 people from the Stavropol traffic police department were arrested in a large-scale operation.

“A real mafia group is active in the area,” Khinshtein wrote while sharing photos of the lavish interior of Safonov’s mansion. A detail that many netizens noticed is the gold-plated toilet.

Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev fired Major General Sergei Shchetkin, the head of the Stavropol regional police force. Some of the people arrested were his direct subordinates. Safonov has been the head of the Stavropol regional traffic police since 2012.
