STORY – From November 4, Artcurial is selling online a one-of-a-kind collection of nearly 100 cars. These models, mainly French, from the years 1970-1980, are in near new condition.

They are all familiar to us. Some accompanied us to school and rocked our family vacation road trips in the backseat. Others guided our first steps as young drivers. In terms of urban and peri-urban mobility, the future is electric. However, the offer is slow to expand because of prohibitive development costs and components. This is why Piaggio, Honda, KTM and Yamaha have joined forces by creating the SBMC consortium whose mission is to develop a common and standardized solution of interchangeable batteries. The objective is obviously to provide the greatest number of users with a relevant response in terms of cost, performance, autonomy and recharging.

Attractive rates

No one yet knows the deadline set by this consortium to market zero-emission machines at attractive prices, but meanwhile, BMW continues its breakthrough. MG Motor, electric acceleration


NEW – The Chinese manufacturer is multiplying the novelties of electric vehicles. In the coming months, it will launch three models including a new station wagon.

Chinese manufacturers will perhaps become the big winners of the ecological transition and the electric shift. Not a week goes by without a brand from the Middle Kingdom announcing its intention to enter the European market with electric models. According to statistics released by ACEA, Chinese vehicle imports doubled in 2020. And that may just be the beginning. MG Motor, owned by Chinese SAIC Motor, has just unveiled its program for the coming months. On the menu: three models, two of which are new. The first is a 4.67m SUV dubbed Marvel R.

Evoking from certain angles the MG ZS EV, the Marvel R displays its own personality through a front end with two air intakes in the form of a lying V, flush door handles, a light strip between the taillights and a very upscale interior. It is distinguished by an imposing inclined central tunnel housing a large 19.4-inch screen. Two versions appear in the catalog: rear-wheel drive and integral. The Comfort and Luxury finishes are powered by two electric motors placed on the rear wheels and displaying a cumulative power of 180 hp. Thanks to the integration of an additional motor on the front axle, the Performance version with 4-wheel drive claims a power of 288 hp and a generous torque of 665 Nm. It announces a range of 370 km according to the WLTP standard while the rear-wheel drive version is approved at 402 km. All versions are associated with a 70 kWh battery which can accept a charging power of 92 kW. In this case, the accumulators recover 80% of their capacity in 43 minutes. Prices range from € 39,990 (excluding bonus) to € 48,990 for the Performances model.

During the first quarter of 2022, MG Motor will be the first manufacturer to market a 100% electric station wagon. With a length of 4.54 m, the MG5 will benefit from a generous loading volume, from 479 to 1,400 liters, with the rear seat folded down. Unlike the Marvel R SUV, the 156 hp engine will be placed on the front axle. It will be powered by a 61.1 kWh battery which would allow a range of 400 km according to the WLTP standard. Its price will start below the 30,000 euros mark. The MG5 station wagon will be available in an entry-level version with a 50.3 kWh battery in the course of 2022.

Finally, the third MG Motor model concerns the facelift of the ZS EV. Its design has been revamped and the range has been extended to 440 km thanks to a 70 kWh battery.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, in a new mold


TEST – Revolution in the land of the Yankee: to play in the court of European sportswomen, the legend of American sportswomen installs the engine at the rear.

Very plunging short nose, forward cabin and long rear hood: the eighth generation of the Chevrolet Corvette soon in the Chassay showroom, the specialist in the genre in Tours and the only declared distributor in France for the moment, is unrecognizable. For the first time in its history, this rolling legend abandons the pre-engineered architecture that was believed to be immutable and converts to the mid-engine, like supercars. A revolution that Aston Martin has also just led with the Valhalla. Considered to be an asset in terms of agility and handling efficiency, the installation of the engine behind the backs of the passengers determines the style.

The appearance of the “Vette” thus approaches most European super sports cars with imposing air intakes in the rear wings to cool the mechanics, visible under the bubble of the rear hatch. By switching to the central engine, the template changes category, exceeding the Corvette C7 by 137 mm and the Porsche 911 by 120 mm in length, while culminating 66 mm lower than the German reference. Yet the American sports car fails to match its rival in terms of livability. It remains a strict two-seater when the 911 offers two back-up seats. On the other hand, the American sports car has two chests, at the front and at the rear. As long as you have the right luggage for the spaces, the rear hood occupies the entire width of the car but is shallow. With 356 liters, the cargo volume is far from ridiculous. If it is lower than the model it replaces, this does not affect accessibility on board, facilitated by the presence of a traditional door that is opened using a keeper hidden under the ring black plastic crossing the sides. On board, we find the cockpit spirit of the previous one, but in a more luxurious atmosphere, reflecting a lifted finish and more refined materials. Our test C8 was thus fully upholstered in a suede upholstery with topstitching. One-piece bucket seats with reinforced or comfort side support and a double-flattened steering wheel with electric adjustment on both planes, the Corvette maintains an excellent driving position.

The ergonomics are just as remarkable. It can count on a central driver-oriented infotainment screen and digital instrumentation that varies according to the driving modes selected from a rotary dial: rain, cruise, sport and circuit. The engineers have thought of everything and you can also configure many elements: steering, suspension, engine and gearbox response, braking feeling, engine sound. An unmistakable sign, the Z mode button on the steering wheel determines the sportiest combination of settings. Another novelty: the arch separating the two seats and descending from the top of the board accommodates all the air conditioning controls and ventilated and heated seats.

A question of sensitivity but also of uses, the Corvette was immediately marketed with two types of bodywork: coupe and convertible (+ € 6,550). If the latter relies on an electric folding of the headgear, a first, the coupe can also remove the top in composite materials but manually. It can be stored in the rear trunk, provided that it is not occupied by luggage.

The acceleration is frank, but the new Stingray unrolls its 482 horsepower with constancy but without virulence. This new V8, still with two valves per cylinder, may well be the most powerful in the history of the Corvette, it lacks character, for lack of a rewarding sound and sufficient length. Supervised by a Magnetic Ride suspension with controlled damping which adapts very quickly, the chassis riveted to the ground reconciles efficiency and great ease of driving. So true that the rider no longer has to contend with the long clutch pedal stroke and firm gear lever locks: the new Stingray converts to the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission. Depending on your mood and appetite, you can let the automation operate – in casting, the ratios change at 1,800 rpm – or take control with the paddles on the steering wheel. Either way, the box is never fast enough.

Our opinion

The latest Corvette Stingray is well born as evidenced by its second place at Le Mans in GT, last August. Its services are of high quality, without departing from an unbeatable price that has helped forge the legend. As it became easier to drive, the Corvette lost its tough character. The next C8 Z06 should remedy this deficiency.

Jeep Grand Cherokee, a well-bred Yankee

In total, this Jeep boasts a power of 375 horsepower and a torque of 637 Nm. While it’s not certain that its owners dare to put the beautiful 21-inch wheels down in sunken and muddy roads, the Grand Cherokee is armed to face the elements. His frankness skills are further strengthened. It combines the latest electronic systems – Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II – to which must be added the air suspension with electronic semi-active damping.

We will have to wait for the second half of 2022 to see this well-bred Yankee arrive on our roads.

Villa d’Este 2021: An award-winning Ferrari 250 GT

The BMW group, organizer of the Concours d’Elegance at the Villa d’Este, was right to persevere. Canceled in May 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and then postponed twice, this major event in the annual collector car calendar, which finally took place on the first weekend of October on the shores of Lake Como, gave rise to a spectacle of great quality. For once, an Italian machine won the Best of Show. Two years after awarding the title to a 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B berlinetta, the jury of the Villa d’Este competition voted overwhelmingly for the 1956 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione long chassis chassis # 0507 GT.

Owned by the American Brian Ross who acquired the famous Ferrari 335 S from the Bardinon collection at the Artcurial auction in 2016 at Rétromobile, the 250 GT is the second long-chassis competition berlinette produced from the first series of nine vehicles. It still presents the round shapes of the 250 Europa model. Like the 335 S tray, Ross bought his 250 in Monterey at the RM Sotheby’s sale. He had paid it $ 5,720,000. The berlinetta was delivered to its first owner, the Dr Ottavio Randaccio from Milan, April 23, 1956. Five days later, the berlinetta left for the Mille Miglia.

Damaged, the 250 GT # 0507 GT did not reappear until a year later and took part in a multitude of events in Italy and Austria. In 1959, the Grenoble pilot René Trautmann acquired it. At the wheel, he took part in several hill climbs and even in the Tour de France Auto, but retired. The berlinetta then returns to Italy before staying in Switzerland. In 2000, she crossed the Atlantic, joining the collection of Sam Mann. Returning to its original configuration following a complete restoration, the gray berlinetta won numerous prizes in American elegance contests.
