The news caused a stir in the Bouches-du-Rhône. The police made a macabre discovery, Sunday, July 18, in an apartment in the city center of Tarascon. Called by residents, the police came across a bag containing a mutilated and decapitated body. DNA analyzes are expected to identify the victim, who could be a 13-year-old boy who has recently disappeared. The occupant of the home, described as threatening by the neighborhood, was killed by police as he tried to escape. In addition to the homicide investigation, entrusted to the Marseille judicial police, the General Inspectorate of National Police (IGPN) was seized to shed light on the fatal shooting which neutralized the suspect.

The victim was killed and then mutilated

According to several testimonies and the observations of the police officers dispatched on the spot reported by La Provence (paid item), the body was found in a plastic bag. The remains showed signs of mutilation, with pieces of flesh torn off in places “. The body had also been decapitated, the head having been found in a bucket in the bathroom.

The victim died before the sordid act, however, “of a cranio-cerebral trauma”, said the prosecutor Laurent Gumbau, quoted by France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. The magistrate thus evokes “one or more violent blows to the head [portés] by an undoubtedly heavy and blunt instrument “. The body also presented a cardiopulmonary perforation, probably caused by a stabbing weapon.

The suspect suffers from psychiatric disorders

The vagueness still reigns as to the motive of this murder. The 32-year-old suspect fled through the roof of his apartment building before law enforcement intervened on the evening of July 18 and was shot dead by a police officer a few hours later. Unfavorably known to the police, he suffered from psychiatric disorders and had already been sentenced twice, between 2016 and 2020, for acts of violence with a weapon.

“When I heard the sirens, I said to myself that it was not serious, that he had set his house on fire again”, confided a neighbor to Provence (paid item). “It had been polluting the neighborhood for 15 years”, lamented another resident, questioned by the daily. Many satanic objects have also been found in the home of the alleged murderer, without this having yet been linked to the murder.

On July 10, the 30-year-old was internally interned at the end of police custody, reports France 3 Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, because considered a danger to himself and to others. He had spent 8 days in a psychiatric unit before coming out on the day of the tragedy, because he was “at the end of the stay”, said the prosecutor of Tarascon.

DNA analysis results are awaited

An autopsy and DNA analyzes are underway to determine the identity of the victim. The results of the genetic analyzes should be available shortly, announced the public prosecutor of Tarascon, Laurent Gumbau, to AFP. Investigators are trying to find out whether the body found is that of a 13-year-old boy named Romain, who recently fled from a foster home in Marseille, less than 100 km away.

The teenager had been followed by social services since October 2019 and had been placed in other homes in Nîmes then in Marseille. It was this runaway that led investigators to Tarascon, where the young boy’s mother resides. “As part of the report of a running away from a thirteen-year-old teenager (…), the police intervened and were led to target for this worrying disappearance an apartment located in the old Tarascon”, Laurent Gumbau confirmed to the newspaper Free noon.

Sunday July 18, around 11 p.m., the police were indeed called by residents of rue Lubières, in the historic center of the city, for suspicious actions on the part of a neighbor. A body would then have been seen. Living in the same street, the mother of young Romain had reported the worrying disappearance of her son a few hours earlier. DNA analyzes are underway to determine if these two cases are one.
