The Gates family owns stocks, real estate, and super cars, but has also donated tens of billions of dollars to charity.
Bill Gates and his wife Melinda on May 3 announced their divorce after 27 years of marriage. The Microsoft cofounder is currently the 4th richest person in the world, with a net worth of $ 130.5 billion, according to the report Forbes. He is also one of eight people with 100 billion dollars in the world.
It is not clear whether the billionaire couple had an agreement to divide this huge fortune from before or not. 1997, New York Times indicates that this agreement exists. If not, because both live in Washington, all assets acquired after the marriage are considered common property and will have to be divided equally upon divorce if the two parties cannot agree.
Gates 130 billion dollars mainly come from investments in stocks and other assets. He has a $ 1 billion investment fund called Breakthrough Energy and about 20 other funds.
Despite his fortune, Gates once told famous host Ellen DeGeneres that when he became the youngest billionaire in the world at the age of 31, he did not spend it wastefully.
Even so, sometimes he spends a lot of time. Bill Gates is said to own a 19-seat Bombardier BD-700 Global Express, worth $ 40 million.
He also spent a lot of money on the Xanadu 2.0 house in Medina, Washington. He bought the land for $ 2 million in 1988. After that, he spent 7 years and spent $ 63 million to build the house. The mansion has a trampoline playroom and is equipped with a $ 80,000 computer screen number.
The mansion is decorated with many expensive artworks, including a painting of Winslow Homer purchased by Gates for $ 36 million in 1988.
Gates also imports sand from St. John’s. Lucia in the Caribbean to pour around the house as a beach. The entire villa area has 6 kitchens, 24 bathrooms, a 20-seat cinema and a garage with a capacity of 23 cars.
Gates said his first luxury spend after founding Microsoft was a Porsche 911 supercar. He then sold it. The car was auctioned, earning $ 80,000. Of course, this is not the billionaire’s last Porsche. He also has a Porsche 959 in his car collection.
Gates has a farm over 1.8 hectares in Wellington, Florida. The campus is a 1,200-square-meter villa. He spent $ 27 million to buy this place because his daughter Jennifer likes horse racing.
In Rancho Paseana, California, he owns a 92-hectare farm, bought for $ 18 million, including a racetrack, a garden and five warehouses. In the state of Wyoming, he also has another larger farm, nearly 200 hectares, purchased for $ 8.9 million in 2009.
In 2020, he added to his $ 43 million beachfront home real estate portfolio in Del Mar, California. The house has 6 bedrooms, Jacuzzi for 10 people and a swimming pool.
Bill Gates also has many real estate investments through his personal company called Cascade. He owns a large stake in the Charles Hotel (Cambridge, Massachusetts). He also owns almost half a stake in Four Season Holding’s hotel chain.
In 2013, Gates and a few people bought the Ritz-Carlton hotel in San Francisco for $ 161 million. In 2014, this property was valued at $ 200 million.
When not busy working, Gates went on vacation with his family. Gates loves to go to Australia, Belize, Croatia and the Amazon Forest in Brazil. He once rented a Serene superyacht for $ 5 million a week, including a helicopter, for the whole family to vacation in the Mediterranean.
Gates once said he likes to play tennis, ski, and play bridge. In addition, he is famously known for his love of reading. Gates doesn’t like to shop for himself, but admits he likes to buy “cool stuff” for his wife.
However, what he spent only made up a small part of his huge fortune. Instead, Gates regularly uses the property for charity or for the community. Gates once poured money into Amyris – a company that previously made compounds for malaria drugs and biofuel. Currently, the company focuses on perfumes, skin care and sweeteners.
In November 2017, he invested $ 50 million to study Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, he poured another $ 30 million into this diagnostic program, part of the Diagnostics Accelerator project.
Bill and Melinda co-found a charity called the couple. To date, both have given away tens of billions of dollars. Gates also signed the Commitment to Give, which he co-founded in 2010, to contribute the majority of his fortune to charity.
In 2016, the couple donated $ 2 billion to global health and education programs in the US. In 2017, both donated another $ 4.78 billion to charities.
They also pledged $ 2 billion to fight malaria, $ 50 million to fight Ebola, and $ 38 million to a Japanese pharmaceutical company to make a low-cost polio vaccine. The Gates Foundation has also pledged to spend at least $ 2.5 billion on the GAVI Alliance, aimed at increasing access to vaccines for poor countries.
Bill and Melinda also prioritize education. Charities both founded the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, which received $ 1.6 billion in donations. They also partnered with Dangote Foundation in 2016 to spend $ 100 million on reducing malnutrition in Nigeria.
In 2020, the Gates Foundation is very active in the global fight against Covid-19. They pledged $ 100 million to this effort, largely for vaccine development.
Gates dedicates very little fortune to his three children. Each person will only receive 10 million USD.
