Escaping from a penalty in injury time, Atletico Madrid won 1-0 at Elche in round 34 of La Liga on May 1.
Goal: Llorente 23 & # 39;.
Marcos Llorente was at the heart of the match when he scored in the first half, while also causing Atletico to receive a penalty at the last minute. The Madrid team avoided a draw when Fide Chaves hit the post from a distance of 11 meters in stoppage time. A 1-0 victory was enough for Atletico to keep the top of La Liga after round 34, five points ahead of Real and Barca and more than one match.
Barca’s stumbling block in a match against Granada in the middle of the week helped Atletico relieved part of the psychological burden. The army of coach Diego Simeone put pressure on Elche right after the opening whistle. The couple Luis Suarez – Angel Correa repeatedly fired the home goal in the first 15 minutes. Suarez even put the ball into Elche’s net in the 16th minute, after Marcos Llorente’s pass. However, after consulting the VAR, the referee punished the former Barca striker for an offside foul.
Seven minutes after the congratulatory phase, the visitors took a 1-0 lead when Llorente cushioned the ball in the penalty area to hit defender Elche into the net, from Yannick Carrasco’s cross. It is Llorente’s seventh goal in La Liga this season. Total goals and assists of the Spanish midfielder in 2021 are 15, just behind Lionel Messi and Gerard Moreno.
Elche changed their tactics only after the break, by organizing their quick attack to the downside. However, the poor quality of personnel caused the homeowners to only release two winning shots towards Atletico’s goal in the whole game. On the opposite side, Simeone took the initiative to let the students kick slowly in the second half, waiting for the chance to double the gap. In the 64th minute, Suarez continued to put the ball in Elche’s net in the face of the goalkeeper, but the goal was not recognized because of an offside error.
Suarez’s dynamism gave Atletico a few chances to score a second goal but the visitors could not take advantage of it. In the last minutes, Atletico put all their strength to protect the net. Their proportion of possession fell to 36% in the second half. However, the intention of the capital team almost went bankrupt. In the last official minute of the game, Llorente let the ball touch his hand in the penalty area. The referee did not hesitate to give Elche a penalty. Fortunately for Atletico, Fidel Chaves’ kick-back helped them preserve a narrow victory. On Elche’s side, the failure made them not escape the group holding the red light.
