Another Indian hands over ‘VMware’ as CEO of global technology company

New Delhi: Cloud and virtualization company VMware has selected Rangarajan Raghuram, of Indian descent, as its CEO. Raghuram will take over in June. However, after Raghuram’s election, Sanjay Punen, a colleague of Indian descent, has resigned. VMware is a company owned by Dell Technology.

Raghuram and Punen were both working as COOs in VMware and were vying for the CEE position. The post fell vacant following the resignation of former CEO Pat Gelsinger in January. Now Raghuram has found a place in the list of top CEOs of Indian descent. He is preceded in death by Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, Arvind Krishna of IBM, Satya Nadella of Microsoft and Shantanu Narayan of Adobe.

“I am excited to see Raghuram as the CEO of VMware,” said Michael Dale, chairman of the VMware Board of Directors. He has been instrumental in the success of VMware throughout his career. He is now in a position to play a key role in the future of VMware, helping customers and partners in this multi-cloud world.

Since joining VMware in 2003, Raghuram has helped shape the company’s direction and revolutionize technology. The company says it has been instrumental in expanding the virtualization business, setting policy on data centers, guiding the company’s cloud computing business, changing software services, as well as partnering with Dell Technology.

The VMware end-to-end software platform is poised to lead this multi-cloud computing world to transform the digital world of spanning clouds, data centers and customers, Raghuram said. Raghuram graduated from IIT-Bombay. Then in 1994 he went to Wharton to do his MBA. After a brief stint at Bang Networks and Netscape, he joined VMware in August 2003.

Meanwhile, Punen has also graduated from IIT-Bombay. He has also worked for Microsoft, Apple, Symantec and SAP.

Paul Sagan, one of the directors of VMware, said that after a thorough and thoughtful decision, the board decided that Raghuram was the right person for the position of CEO of the company. They reflect the value of the company and have a clear vision for the future of the company. We thank Zen Rowe for his role as interim CEO. Also, they will be working as CFOs.
